GIMP on monipuolinen kuvankäsittelyohjelma.
Ohjelman käyttöliittymä perustuu eri ikkunoihin, joita avautuu käytön aikana lisää tilanteesta riippuen. Ainakin Windows käyttöjärjestelmään tottuneelle se voi tuntua aluksi oudolta.
Ominaisuuksiltaan GIMP on kattava. Työkaluista ja tehosteista löytyy kaikki yleiset kaupallisista kuvankäsittelyohjelmista tutut ominaisuudet. Lisäksi ohjelma tukee kymmeniä eri tiedostomuotoja (BMP, JPEG, PNG, GIF, TIFF, ICO, RAW ym. ja ohjelmien kuten mm. Paint Shop Pro:n tiedostoformaatteja.).
Ohjelma saattaa kaatuilla satunnaisesti Windows -järjestelmillä joten työn jatkuva tallentaminen on suositeltavaa.
